acupuncture needles vary in size

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of treatment utilizing thin needles inserted through the skin at various points of the body. The length of the needle and depth of penetration can vary. Modern research validates the use of acupuncture to relieve pain or many other symptoms.

Traditional acupuncturists consider the balancing of the body or restoration of the flow of chi throughout the person. Many of the western style acupuncturists lean towards the musculoskeletal points to reduce pain and enhance healing of damaged tissues.

Is acupuncture and dry needling the same?

The short answer is, no. Although both treatment methods utilize the same type of needle, that is about where the similarities end. Researchers estimate acupuncture to be anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 years old. Dry needling is more of a modern technique, having first been labeled in 1979.

Traditional acupuncture usually consists of the insertion of a needle in a specific point and left for an extended period. It is used to balance or restore energy flow. Dry needling is the insertion and moving about of the needle in a specific manner. It is used for reducing pain or restoring function of a musculoskeletal region.
